Activate Your Talent believes that goal setting is an essential element of personal and professional success. In fact, we are so passionate about this topic, we recently dedicated an entire social media series to it. It was so much fun learning about the importance, and benefits, of setting clear, actionable goals we decided to encapsulate our insights into a short blog post for easy implementation. Enjoy!
Four Steps to Goal Setting
- Figure out what you want, where you want to go, and who you want to be.
If you haven’t clearly defined what you want the future to look like, it is impossible to get there! Setting goals gives you clarity and forces you to crystallize and articulate your inner desires. This process will ensure that you are channeling your time, energy and efforts into things that really matter to you. Have fun with this step- throw out all the rules and dream!
- Take your vision and turn it into a written list of concrete goals.
There is something incredibly powerful about physically writing down your goals. In 1979, there was a study conducted on the Harvard MBA program where graduate students were asked, “Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?” It turns out that only 3% had written goals and plans, 13% had goals but they weren’t in writing, and 84% had no goals at all.
Ten years later, the same group was interviewed again. The 13% of the class who had goals, but did not write them down was earning TWICE the amount of the 84% who had no goals. The 3% who had written goals were earning, on average, TEN TIMES as much as the other 97% of the class combined!
Written goals allow you to interact with your thoughts in a tangible way, drive you forward, and serve as a constant incentive toward your motivational sources.
- Choose an achievable time frame to accomplish your goals along with measurable benchmarks along the way.
Establishing a time line allows you to plan out the necessary steps, mark your progress, and ensure that you are on track for success. This step holds you accountable to the process of turning your dreams into reality.
- Celebrate your success!
This is often the most overlooked step in the goal setting process, but arguably the most important. Pausing to reflect on and recognize your hard work and dedication creates a positive memory that will help inspire future goal setting endeavors.
